    Review

Tunneling, encryption, and security— the terms most often considered when discussing virtual private networks (VPN). In this course, participants examine all aspects of VPNs (i.e., networks that add privacy to public networks such as the Internet) to better serve mobile networks and remote users.

In this course, we identify various VPN issues, including security threats from hackers, and quality of service (QoS) concerns such as delay and jitter. Participants take an in-depth look at security issues and VPN solutions, including cryptography, authentication, and certificates, while also considering various security techniques and protocols. The course provides a survey of VPN tunneling protocols such as Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP), and Secure IP (IPSec). At the same time, we’ll consider aspects of corporate VPNs, including the use and configuration of firewalls and proxy servers, especially as they relate to remote access and site-to-site connectivity over the Internet. The course concludes with a look at VPN service offerings, strategies, and deployment issues.
