Blog Brokenness

There are several things that broke here during my last upgrade (to Wordpress 2.0). Since Doug pointed one out to me last night, I’ll mention them here in case anyone cares.

Comments don’t show. Every post that gets a comment continues to show no comments forever. I can’t figure out why. I get notified, but the page doesn’t accurately reflect comments.

My tagging tool (A WP plugin called Simple Tags) doesn’t work any more. Well it works badly, because the new WP editor sucks. And alternate editors, while legitimate, apparently don’t post in a way WP will accept the tags. So words show up, the tagnames, but they aren’t actual tags. The WP editor sucks dirty pond water to tell you the truth. I’ve yet to find a WP user who doesn’t think the new editor is crap.Tags work if I manually insert HTML. That’s a pain in the butt, but sometimes I’ll do it. They’ll look like they do on this opst and mean I used Performancing for Firefox as my edit tool. Sometimes I won’t bother. Tags remain of dubious value to me anyway and their limited value seems to be quickly declining.

Postie, a post by email plugin ceased working and I get errors telling me I’m an invalid user and to log in and create an account for me. I only used Postie to email picture posts from my cell phone or PDA. Now I use Flickr. I prefer Postie, but I fought with it until it just wasn’t worth fighting any more.

Other stuff. I’m confident other stuff I don’t know about is borked. I’d bet money on it.

I hear the way to fix is is delete WP and do a clean install from scratch rather than the upgrade process. That sounds like a recipe for headache and too much damn work. If I do that I’ll export to some other platform. But I don’t really want another platform. I want stuff to work. So I’ll just remain cranky about WP. Maybe the next upgrade will fix it all. Maybe it’l piss me off enough to change.
